3 Easy Ways to Put The SDGs into Practice

SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are a term that translates to “Sustainable Development Goals” and clarify the 17 goals that should be addressed in the world.

Specifically, efforts are being made in various areas such as poverty, health, and education.

Many of you may have wondered, “What can we do to achieve the SDGs?”

Therefore, in this article, we introduce three SDGs methods that can be easily put into practice.

What is SDGs?

1. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The SDGs (or Sustainable Development Goals) are 17 goals containing 169 targets that all countries have signed up to meet by 2030 to address inequality, hunger and tackle climate change (amongst other things).

Just like other efforts that consider environmental, social, and governance factors (ESG endeavors), helping achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a big opportunity for countries and companies.

2. The 17 Goals

These 17 goals include:

  1. End poverty everywhere.
  2. End hunger and malnutrition, ensure everyone has access to safe food.
  3. Make sure everyone has access to healthcare and lives a healthy life.
  4. Give everyone a good education, no matter who they are.
  5. Make sure women and girls have equal opportunities.
  6. Ensure everyone has clean water and toilets.
  7. Provide everyone with affordable and clean energy.
  8. Create good jobs and a strong economy for everyone.
  9. Build strong infrastructure and protect the environment while creating new inventions.
  10. Reduce the gap between rich and poor, both within and between countries.
  11. Make cities safe, clean, and livable for everyone.
  12. Use resources wisely and avoid waste.
  13. Fight climate change and its effects.
  14. Protect our oceans and marine life.
  15. Take care of our forests and land, and stop the loss of plants and animals.
  16. Promote peace and justice for all.
  17. Work together to achieve these goals globally.

3 Easy Ways to Implement the SDGs Right Now

Without further ado, here are three ways to implement the SDGs that you can work on right now.

  • Supporting local production for local consumption
  • Be conscious of saving water and electricity
  • Use your own bag or bottle

1. Supporting Local Production for Local Consumption

Local production for local consumption refers to the idea of consuming locally produced agricultural products and products in the region.

This is because by purchasing local produce, you can reduce the amount of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emitted when transporting from distant areas.

In addition, buying locally grown produce can help create a sustainable economy, boosting the local economy and supporting farmers.

Supporting Local Production for Local Consumption

Goal 2 of the SDGs is “Zero Hunger.”

In fact, local production for local consumption ensures access to fresh and nutritious ingredients, and also plays a major role in achieving Goal 2.

So, if you’re not sure where to start with the SDGs, why not start with local production for local consumption?

First, visit a local produce market or shop that sells local ingredients.

2. Be Conscious of Saving Water and Electricity

Saving water and electricity is one of the ways to implement the SDGs that we can easily start in our daily lives.

For example, you can reduce your daily water use by using the shower a little less or by opening the tap only when you use it, rather than leaving it open while you brush your teeth.

Moreover, you can also reduce electricity usage by remembering to turn off the lights when you leave the house and by setting the heating and cooling temperatures appropriately.

Setting The Heating And Cooling Temperatures Appropriately

These efforts will help reduce the waste of resources such as water and energy.

Among the goals of the SDGs are “Clean water and sanitation around the world (Goal 6)” and “Clean energy for everyone (Goal 7).

In short, the accumulation of small daily actions to reduce the waste of water and energy is the first step in achieving the SDGs.

3. Use Your Own Bag or Bottle

The use of My Bag or My Bottle leads to a reduction in plastic waste.

There are many plastic products in our lives.

In particular, single-use plastic products are one of the major environmental problems facing modern society.

Obviously, plastics need hundreds of years to break down.

Once a plastic product is made, it will continue to pollute the environment for a long time.

In addition, plastic waste in the ocean has a significant impact on ecosystems.

Plastic Waste

As mentioned, goal 14 of the SDGs is “Life below water.”

For example, the sea turtle incident would not have happened if we hadn’t thrown our plastic bags into the ocean.

To prevent marine life from accidentally eating plastic bags, use your own bag or bottle on a daily basis.

By doing so, we can reduce plastic waste, such as plastic bags, and thus move closer to our goal of protecting the richness of our oceans.

Why are the SDGs Important for the Environment?

The SDGs are a big step forward for the environment.

They recognise that we all depend on the planet’s natural resources – its forests, rivers, oceans and land – for our social and economic wellbeing.

We all know using Earth’s resources wisely requires a fair and healthy society that doesn’t rely on dirty fuels and harming the environment.

If the global community makes good on its promises, by 2030 we will live in a world that has:

  • Halted the loss of biodiversity and saved threatened species from extinction
  • Ended deforestation
  • Put a stop to poaching and trafficking of protected species
  • Ended overfishing and significantly reduced the pollution of our oceans
  • Created an economy that grows without damaging the environment

It’s now up to us all – governments, charities, businesses, and most of all citizens – to work together to ensure that these commitments become a reality.

Conclusion

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact lives and livelihoods, many of noted the impact of the health, social and economic crises on the progress towards achieving the SDGs.

Therefore, this makes urgent action ever more necessary.
